N inscribed verso: VZ987 artist, title and date on a typed label verso, further inscribed: This work was painted on a tea-chest lid whilst stationed at the Millary[sic] Army Camp at Bellarat[sic], NW of Melbourne. Nolan said that it was a cold place and a cold night when his thoughts turned to memories of St Kilder[sic.] Beach and Lunar [sic.] Park on warmer days.
